The eco-lodge is clean, fresh and functional with an emphasis on re-use rather than eco-chic. It perches on a hillside under the shadow of the dramatic Devil's Chair rock formation - the most distinctive landmark of the Stiperstones ridge.

Windows are large, double glazed and frame unrivalled views of Shropshire and beyond. The floor is ceramic tiled throughout. The furnishings are clean, practical and inoffensive. There is one double room and one with bunk-beds. Both bedrooms have generous storage. The bathroom has a large shower, toilet and hand basin. In the kitchen area is a gas hob and oven, a fridge (with freezer compartment), and ample unit/cupboard space.

A microwave and television are also provided. In the living area is a bench table and sofa bed seating. Double doors open on to a wide balcony that runs the length of the chalet and leads to an enclosed lawned area.

Sue has made some sensible choices that have vastly improved the environmental credentials of this chalet built from British timber. Good insulation and double glazing means the underfloor heating is efficient and economical (there is a coin meter for electricity provided by a renewable supplier). The lodge has been decorated with ecological paints and biodegradable cleaning products are used. There is a comprehensive recycling and composting system for waste. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bed linen and towels, but these can be provided for a small charge.

We all know that finance can sometimes restrain our ecological ideals and this can also extend to our choice of holiday. There is a danger that 'environmentally friendly' could become an elitist middle class club that prices out some people. However, many ecological principles do not cost money, they just take a little bit of thought. This is accommodation for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint whilst on holiday, but also do so on a limited budget.
